RE: King Ranch gear ratio

The Ford diesels typically make their power higher in the RPM band than the Duramax and Cummins diesels. That makes them perform best with the lower (numerically higher) gear ratios. ....what ib516b said. Middle son has a new F-450 dually with the 4.30 gear towing his new Fuzion full of quads. Probably towing 16-16.5K and getting 8mpg with the latest flash (got as low as 6.5 towing until he got over 12K on the truck). I get 10.5 - 11.5 with my '05 F-350 SRW with the 3.73 gear towing our 3712 (see sig) at about 15K. He can pull me on some of the local hills, but I've got better range. Both trucks pull hard, but the likelihood is you'll never see over 10mpg with the new 6.4 and the 4.30 gear.

RE: ladder on side going down road?

Hi All, As you can see, I pull a toy Hauler, Yes the ladder is on the side. (the big door on the back won't let you put one on the back, for non-toy hauler people) Well I take my ladder off when I am on the road, (it is just too wide with it) I have seen two Big and max wide toy haulers going down the road with their ladders on the side?????? Now for the question. DO you leave your ladder on the side of your Toy Hauler when going down the road??? I do not. I think on the highways 8 foot or 8 foot 6 inch is the max you can be with out a wide load sign on your rig. See you on the road. I've got a '06 3712 and I bought four ladder mounts from my dealer and put them on the rear door so I can transport the ladder on the back while in transit. Works great, was cheap and doesn't take up garage space. Got the idea from Y-guy when he had his 3612.

RE: 2008 Ford diesel - low MPG?

Middle son has an '08 F-450 4x4 dually crew with 4.30 gears and gets 12 empty and 7-8 towing. I get 17 empty (better with cap) and 11 - 12 towing with my '05 F-350 4x4 SRW CC 6.0 and our 5er's are virtully the same weight, although he gennerally tows a little heavier than I do as he dry camps more and carries water. His truck is now at the dealer for a low (below spec) high-pressure fuel supply issue (has left him stranded twice in the last 3 weeks with the 5er up). They are pulling the cab off to affect a repair......said they would have it a week. There is another truck at the dealer with exactly the same issue - both trucks are early '08 (Job 1) trucks. He's thinking of selling it - I plan to keep mine.

RE: Raptor Owners

We've got a 2006 3712TS with about 15K on it and we' really love it. There have been a couple minor problems but nothing that couldn't be repaired in a day (new inverter the most significant). We've done a few mods on ours (heat into the garage, moved the TV, etc.) and we really love the coach. Middle son and his wife just traded thier WW on a Raptor and they're very happy too. As jasonlisan just said, no maufacturer is free of issues, so I'd suggest making sure you have a good dealer as ours has made our Raptor ownership a real pleasure - a bad dealer could make a great coach seem like a lemon. Good luck, let us know what you decide.

RE: Which Hitch with a Mor-Ryde Pin Box

We've been running a B&W Turnover Ball w/5th Wheel Companion on our 3712 Raptor with a MOR/ryde pin box for a little over 3 years and it's proven to be a great combination. I really like the fact I can pull the hitch and have all my truck bed to use. In addition we tow a goose neck car trailer, so the B&W covers both. Both the MOR/ryde and B&W have held up well, been maintenance free (excpet for lube), and show no signs of wear after about 12K miles.

RE: Gloom, dispair, and a glimmer of hope

When we bought our 2005 F-350 6.0 (see sig) I bought it as a truck I would drive/tow with for 15 + years. I'm opening up the exhaust/intake and putting a BD tuner in it to improve mileage and add a little power (use low setting to tow, middle setting for everyday), so can still afford to drive it. That said we're really lucky in that we live where there are lots of beautiful & historic things to see, places to fly, fishing to do and activities for our grand kids and campgrounds in our club within a 500-600 mile radius, so we will continue to travel. We may not be towing to see the kids in Nashville, visiting the friends in the Knoxville, the Carolinas, Kentucky, Alabama, Massachusetts and New York however. Much as I hate to say it we'll probably fly - UNLESS this is a "bubble" and fuel comes down under $4.00. Oh, I did delete the link. DW rarely looks at my computer, but just in case........ ;)

RE: A/C Factory Recall/Repair on 2005 Raptor 3612ds???

You might PM Y-Guy (thread moderator) as he's the real expert on the 3612 - if there was a recall he'd know about it.

RE: Need advice on 5th wheel pin weights and GVWRs

I agree with JBurn and SAS about air bags. we've got Firestones - installed them ourselves - and they work great; we just use them to level everything once loaded. One other thing to ask about the two rigs you're looking at is the location and capacities of the fresh water, gray water and black tanks. By filling/emptying those tanks (especially the fresh) you can change your balance point and pin weight (think of a playground teeter-totter). I'm not familiar with either rig, but if they have on-board gas for toys or a generator you'll want to know where that tank is too (and the capacity). Good questions - let us know what you decide!

RE: B & W Turn Ball Hitch for 5th wheel?

As Delaine and Lindy said it's a great unit! We've got about 10K on ours and love it - middle son put one in his new F-450 after trying ours and a buddy ordered one (dealer installed from Dodge) with his new Ram 3500. We installed ourselves in about 4 hours. Also, we installed a MOR/ryde pin box - another great unit - took about 20 minutes to install and is a great unit!

RE: 6.0 PSD Owners only please

I have an 05 6.0 crew cab short box 4x4 with 3:73 rears. When I am driving 60-62 I can get 19.5 mpg solo. At the same speed towing my 14,000# fiver I get around 10.5 - 11 mpg depending on surroundings. I do about the same as fordtruckguy with my stock '05 F-350 4x4 CC SRW Harley Davidson(see sig) with the 3.73 gear and near 40K miles. I'm getting ready to do an exhaust (leave in converter - open it up to 4"), intake and BD controller as mileage will improve (middle son did it and got +4.5 mpg empty, + 2.5mpg towing). He now has an '08 F-450 with the 4.30 gear and gets 10.5 empty and 8 towing. He wishes he had his old rig back!

RE: Proper procedure for plugging into a 50 amp service

I do as Ultralife and trnfla do, turn breakers off, plug in, turn breakers on. Yep, what they said. IMHO you don't need the breakers off at the trailer panel.

RE: Proper procedure for plugging into a 50 amp service

I do as Ultralife and trnfla do, turn breakers off, plug in, turn breakers on. Yep, what hey said. I don't know why you would need to turn off the breakers at both ends - the main issue is to protect the plug blades, so shutting off the breakers at the pole/hook-up is all you need IMHO.

RE: what slowing down did for me.

Good info on the mileage - and yep, taller tires help. My F-350 6.0 has a sweet spot at about 63mph, so we use that - gain lots of miles andd don't loose any time. on the I-5 with the canopy on I can get 21. I'm getting ready to open up the intake and exhaust (but leaving the cat in - opening it to 4"), and go to a BD tuner. One of the sons did this and picked up 5 mpg empty, 3 towing. Hope things with your dad work out OK.

RE: Wondering!

Let me get this straight 75 less miles NOT on the interstate. Slower speed and better milage on the non interstate road. No brainer to me. And a more secenic drive without being rundown by the big rigs. Priceless. ABSOLUTLY!!
